Data assimilation

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In meteorology , especially in numerical weather forecasting , data assimilation describes a method for adapting a weather forecast model to the actual development of the atmosphere. Mathematically speaking, numerical weather forecasting presents an initial value problem that is underdetermined. The purpose of data assimilation is to create a three-dimensional image of the earth's atmosphere and its background for a specific point in time. This picture shows the initial state, which serves as the starting point for the weather forecast.
