from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Associação dos Escritores Moçambicanos (AEMO) ( Portuguese Association of Mozambican Writers ) is a Mozambican writers' association whose aim is to promote Mozambican works and authors. It does this by publishing Mozambican literature , awarding literary prizes and organizing conferences, study days and discussion groups.

history

The association was founded in Maputo on August 31, 1982 by Luís Bernardo Honwana , Marcelino dos Santos , José Craveirinha , Orlando Mendes , Fernando Ganhão , Sérgio Vieira , Rui Nogar and other intellectuals such as Aquino de Bragança and Carlos Cardoso . The first president of the association was José Craveirinha.

The main aim of the association was to defend the interests of Mozambican writers. In addition, there was the promotion of local literature in Mozambique, which had only been independent since 1975. Essentially, the association's publishing and public relations work should contribute to this. In 1984 the magazine Charrua was founded, which gave an entire generation of writers the name Geração Charrua . Between 1984 and 1986 a total of eight issues of the journal appeared. In 2002 a reading group was set up to introduce secondary school and university students to Mozambican literature.

Publications

AEMO publishes various series of publications. In the Karingana series , prose texts are published. The Timbila series is designed for poetry and the Início series to raise awareness of the works of young Mozambican writers.

Literary prizes

AEMO awards several literary prizes every year. Since 2003, the Prémio José Craveirinha de Literatura has been awarded in cooperation with the operator of the Cabora-Bassa dam , which is endowed with US $ 5,000. In addition, AEMO, in cooperation with the Portuguese cultural institute Instituto Camões in Maputo , awards the Prémio Revelação AEMO for new publications in the fields of poetry, fiction, essay and theater.
