Associazione Internazionale di Archeologia Classica

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Associazione Internazionale di Archeologia Classica ( English : International Association for Classical Archeology ) is an association founded in Rome in 1945 , which serves the international scientific exchange in the field of classical archeology . The tasks she performs are not limited to Italy or the archeology of Italy. Rather, it serves the comprehensive exchange of information about all research and discoveries that are covered by the field of classical archeology.

history

With its establishment immediately after the end of the Second World War , a central contact point was to be created for the numerous foreign scientists who spent the war in Rome or who came to Italy in the wake of the Allied troops. Preparations for the establishment of the facility were made as early as the end of 1944, involving Italian, US, English, Swiss and Swedish archaeologists. On December 18, 1944, Erik Sjöqvist , then director of Svenska Institutet i Rom , the Swedish institute in Rome, was elected the association's first president. On May 5, 1945, the Associazione Internazionale di Archeologia Classica was officially founded with the adoption of the statutes and with the participation of other foreign institutes in the Netherlands, Belgium and Romania.

In its self-image, after the war, the association should tie in with the ideals of the Instituto di Corrispondenza Archeologica, founded in 1828 . This first international association was brought into being under the patronage of the later Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm IV. At the instigation of Eduard Gerhards in particular and served the correspondence on research and discoveries in the field of archeology and the inventory and publication of the antiquities. Its management was international and thus guaranteed its international orientation. When this institution was transferred to an institution of the German Reich in 1871 , it lost its international orientation and left a gap that was to be closed by the Associazione Internazionale di Archeologia Classica after the Second World War .

tasks

One of the first tasks performed by the Associazione was the coordination and maintenance of the archaeological library holdings in Rome and the dissemination of information from the field of archeology to all interested scholars, regardless of nationality. The Fasti Archaeologici became the publication organ. Annual Bulletin of Classical Archeology , the first volume of which appeared in 1946. In 1997 the magazine was discontinued after the publication of the 41st volume. With the Fasti Online it was replaced by an internet-based edition in 2004.

Between 1945 and 1953, the institution assumed responsibility for the library of the German Archaeological Institute in Rome, which was brought back to Rome by the Allies after the end of the war on the initiative of the Unione Internazionale degli Istituti di Archeologia Storia e Storia dell'Arte in Roma . The Associazione restructured the holdings and kept them up to date. In 1953 the library was handed over to the reopened Rome Department of the German Archaeological Institute .

On September 4, 1957, by decree of the Italian President, the association was raised to the rank of a public body. In 1958 she began to organize the International Classical Archeology Congresses . The 17th Congress 2008 was held in Rome to mark the 50th anniversary of this responsibility.

The Associazione is the patron of important international projects, such as the Supplementum Epigraphicum Graecum or the Tabula Imperii Romani, and heads the committees for the study of the ancient city, for the investigation of ancient marble types and the publication of ancient mosaics. It organizes monthly meetings that serve the exchange of Italian and foreign doctoral students in Classical and Late Antiquity Archeology and are alternately organized by the member institutions.

Publications

Fasti Archaeologici

The Fasti Archaeologici. Annual Bulletin of Classical Archeology was published from 1946 to 1997 as the publication organ of the Associazione . In the Fasti the Associazione published its activities and provided information on classical archeology, excavations, the most important publications in this field and bibliographies. The most important member of the editorial board was Maria Floriani Squarciapino , who headed the editorial team from 1956 until 1997 when she was hired.

AIACNews

The AIACNews was launched in 1993 on the occasion of the 24th Classical Archeology Congress in Tarragona . The news appears three times a year and includes reports on the activities of the Italian and foreign institutes based in Rome. In addition, the minutes of the monthly meetings of graduated archeology students of participating university institutes are published. Occasionally important archaeologists and their work are introduced.

Fasti online

The Associazione owes the establishment of Fasti online in 2004 to a generous consideration by the David and Lucile Packard Foundation . Here, following the Fasti Archaeologici, results of the participating countries on excavations are published retrospectively from the year 2000.
