Maria Floriani Squarciapino

Maria Floriani Squarciapino (born 1917 in Rome ; died 2003 ) was an Italian classical archaeologist , responsible for the excavations in Ostia for almost a decade and professor at La Sapienza University in Rome.

Career

Maria Floriani Squarciapino studied at the La Sapienza University in Rome , where she was laureed . In terms of art history, she found a focus of her research early on in Aphrodisias and the "school" of Aphrodisias. She also developed an early interest in the archeology of North Africa in Roman times . After completing her training at the Scuola nazionale di Archeologi , she entered the administration of antiquities and works of art in Italy and in 1946 became inspector at the Soprintendenza for Ostia . For many years she worked closely with Italo Gismondi , Giovanni Becatti , Herbert Bloch and others. After the excavation results for the Ostia necropolis were published in 1959, she devoted herself to the Ostia synagogue , which she discovered in 1961. In 1966 she became soprintendent of the Soprintendenza Archeologica di Ostia, which she directed until 1974.

Already at the time of her entry into the antiquities administration she had pursued a university career. She was Pietro Romanelli's assistant at La Sapienza University, where she also received her habilitation . In 1974 she followed their call to the chair of Archeologia e Storia delle provincie romane.

In addition to the excavations and later management activities in Ostia, she participated in numerous other excavations, for example on the Roman Forum , in Libyan Leptis Magna , on Syrian Tell Mardikh and in Albania . In 1975 she won the most valuable science award in Italy, the Antonio Feltrinelli Prize . Her bibliography, compiled in 1997, comprises 175 titles. In addition to monographs and numerous articles, she contributed with her contributions to the Enciclopedia dell'Arte Antica, Classica e Orientale and from 1982 to 1997 headed the editorial team of the Fasti Archeologici .

Maria Floriani Squarciapino was not only a member, but also president of the Associazione Internazionale di Archeologia Classica . She was also a member of the Pontificia Accademia Romana di Archeologia , the Istituto Nazionale di Studi Romani and the German Archaeological Institute . In 1974 she was accepted into the Gruppo dei Romanisti .
