Italo Gismondi

Italo Gismondi (born on August 12, 1887 in Rome ; died on December 2, 1974 there ) was an Italian architect , building researcher and classical archaeologist .

As a trained architect, Italo Gismondi entered the administration of antiquities and works of art in Italy in 1910 and became director of the excavations in Ostia Antica . This position, in which he soon assumed the position of soprintendent , he held until 1954. At the same time he was head of the Soprintendenza alle Antichità for Rome I , the city center, from 1919 to 1938 .

Throughout his life, Ostia and Rome were the focus of his architectural-historical investigations, which allowed him to draw important conclusions for the reconstruction of ancient buildings from the small remains of archaeological remains. The basis was always the systematization of the found material and the analysis of architectural details. His outstanding research results, in addition to the results of his work in Ostia, were the restoration of the north and west halls of the Diocletian Baths in 1927 and the plans of the Imperial Forums published in 1933 . Above all, it worked originally for the Mostra Augustea della Romanita created model of the city of Rome in the time of Constantine the scale of 1: 250, on which he worked from 1935 to 1971 and in the Museum of Roman Civilization is issued.

Gismondi, whose work and experience was highly valued, was also active for other soprint tendencies, such as Abruzzo and Molise , Umbria and eastern Sicily . In addition, his expertise was in demand on Italy's excavations abroad and in the Italian colonies . So Gismondi also took part in the investigations on Rhodes and by Luigi Pernier in the Cyrenaica in Cyrene and in Tripolitania and contributed his plans and reconstruction drawings.
