history

Judging by historical place names, the name could be of Roman origin. The names of the brothers Jonathus and Winand von Astenoid appear in a document from 1266.

Astenet counted 238 inhabitants in the center of the village in the 1970 census, another 252 inhabitants lived in the associated scattered settlements. The place belonged to the municipality Walhorn until 1977, when it became part of Lontzen as part of the Belgian municipal mergers.

Worth seeing

Gatehouse of Thor Castle
Chapel of St. John the Baptist

In the north of the village is the Thor Castle , a semi-enclosed complex with buildings around a paved courtyard from around 1700. The gatehouse that gives it its name was built in 1733 by Johann Joseph Couven . During cleaning work in the castle pond, the foundation walls of an 11th century moated castle were found.

Opposite Thor Castle is the Mützhof, first mentioned in 1589, on a hill. In between is the chapel of St. John the Baptist, which was rebuilt in 1724 by Drossart Johann Stefan Heyendal. The altar comes from the castle chapel of the Waldenburghaus and was installed in the 19th century. Just a few meters further west is the new forge from 1685. It is the oldest fully preserved half-timbered house in the rural area of the DG.

Another protected cultural monument is Neuhaus Castle, the beginnings of which go back to 1771. It was converted into a country house in 1840 by the widow of District Administrator Bernhard von Scheibler .

Katharinenstift, chapel extension from 1910

The Katharinenstift, which was founded in 1888 thanks to donations from the Aachen entrepreneur Gerhard Rehm (1816–1892) and his wife Katharina, née Ervens (1818–1887), whose estate was pasture . The original purpose was to organize outpatient nursing care in the surrounding villages, to run a household school for girls, to accept women of both denominations as pensioners for the purpose of nursing and to accept Catholic orphans. The Sisters of Mercy were responsible for the organization according to the rules of St. Augustine , who took over the Katharinenstift as the 13th branch. In 1910, the associated chapel was consecrated by Auxiliary Bishop Joseph Müller from Cologne.
