Quirinus Chapel

Rabotrath (formerly also Rabottraed) is a hamlet in the north of the German-speaking Community of Belgium , which belongs to the municipality of Lontzen . The place is rural and is located off the main roads, about 1.5 kilometers south of Lontzen between Walhorn and Herbesthal . In the middle of the village is the Quirinus Chapel , built in 1913 in neo-Gothic style .

history

The place, which presumably emerged from a feudal farm, was first mentioned in a lease from 1407. From its first mention in the late 14th century until around the middle of the 19th century, the Crapoel moated castle stood near Rabothrath, one of the manors in the Hochbank Walhorn (former administrative and judicial district).

Galmei poison

Since the 15th century, Rabotrath Galmeierz open- cast mining was carried out in various phases until 1852. The ore deposits were mined most systematically between 1739 and 1770. During this time 50 to 60 shafts were dug and around 3,500 tons of calamine ores such as zinc, iron and lead were extracted. As Galmeitrift , the area in the north of Rabotrath is now a particularly protected cultural monument .

Rabotrath belonged to the Walhorn community until 1977, when it became part of Lontzen as part of the Belgian community mergers.
