Astramel is a cultivar of the cultivated apple ( Malus domestica ), which was created in 1965 in the fruit growing research institute Jork from a cross of red Astrachan x ( James Grieve x Melba ) and is used as a table apple.
The tree grows moderately and flowers early in the year. The yield is only medium. The variety is prone to apple scab and cancer .
It is a summer apple that is ripe at the end of July / beginning of August and can be stored for about two weeks.
The fruits are medium to large in size, flat, slightly sensitive to pressure, have a smooth skin with a greenish-yellow base color and a red overlay. The taste is aromatic, sweet and sour.
