The Astrolabe Island ( French île de l'Astrolabe , English Astrolabe Island , Spanish isla Astrolabe ) is an island located in the Bransfield Strait west of the Antarctic Trinity Peninsula . It is uninhabited, about 4.8 km in length and is home to various species of penguin (including donkey and Adelie penguins ).
The island was discovered and named during the first French Antarctic expedition (1837-1840) under Jules Dumont d'Urville . One of his ships was called L'Astrolabe , named after the ship of the famous navigator, circumnavigator and geographer Jean-François de La Pérouse , who disappeared in 1788 . This ship also gave the island its name.
The island is located in the Argentine , British and Chilean Antarctic Territory , but these claims have been suspended since the Antarctic Treaty came into force .
