Astronomy in School was a magazine for teachers and students in the GDR . It appeared from 1964 to 1990, the publisher was Volk und Wissen publishing house from Berlin. This magazine was founded by the school observatory "Johannes Franz" in Bautzen . This observatory was also the editorial office from 1963 to 1981, followed by the public and school observatory in Sohland on the Spree , where Helmut Bernhard took over the publication.

The establishment of the magazine is closely related to the increased interest in astronomy and space travel due to the start of Sputnik 1 in 1957 and Juri Gagarin's space flight in 1961.

In 1959, astronomy was introduced as a compulsory subject in the GDR . From 1961 astronomy appeared in school as a supplement to mathematics and physics in school , from 1962 also available separately as a supplement to the magazine for geography lessons .

The magazine published articles on the advanced training of teachers in the field of astronomy, didactic works on teaching practice, as well as essays on educational policy.

Today the magazine continues to appear under the changed title Astronomy + Space Travel in Classes at Friedrich Verlag .
