The stratovolcano Atacazo located about 25 kilometers southwest of the Ecuadorian capital Quito .
The 4463 meter high summit of the volcano is dominated by a caldera with a diameter of six kilometers, in which there are three Dacite lava domes . Two other lava domes are located on the southeast flank of the volcano. During the Plinian explosive eruptions some 2,300 years ago, pyroclastic currents poured up to 35 kilometers into the western valleys. With the help of the radiocarbon method , further large eruptions of the volcano around 6910 BC were possible. BC, 3490 +/- 100 BC B.C. and 2490 +/- 40 B.C. Be proven.
