The small town of ʿAtaq (also: Attaq or Atak ( Arabic عتق, DMG ʿAtaq )) is the capital of the Yemeni Shabwa Governorate . It is located about 460 km southeast of Sanaa , on the west side of the southern Hadramaut table. It can be reached via Marib .

ʿAtaq is about 1150 meters high on average and extends over various altitude levels (according to the GeoNames data world ). According to its own census, the village had around 6600 inhabitants in 2003. In the entire administrative district it is projected to almost 44,000 inhabitants. North of liegtAtaq is the district airport ( ICAO code : OYAT, IATA airport code : AXK).

On May 24, 1994, ʿAtaq was captured by North Yemeni armed forces.

Attractions

The clearly modern 'Ataq is architecturally hardly comparable to other central Yemeni cities, which enables a different way of life. For example, more than half of all buildings are just two-story.

The importance of the Schabwa Museum goes back to prehistoric exhibits, some of which were excavated in the immediate vicinity and which are contained therein. There are exhibits from remains of the submerged old South Arabian capital of the Hadramaut , Shabwat and cultural relics from Qataban .

'Ataq has an old souq , hospital and hotel. There is a military camp in the west of the city.
