Atbara Railway Bridge

The Atbara Railway Bridge is a steel - girder bridge for rail traffic over the Atbara River in Sudan .

The bridge is located south of the city of Atbara . It was built from 1910 to 1911 by Cleveland Bridge & Engineering Co. on behalf of the British Colonial Administration of Anglo-Egyptian Sudan .

It has a total length of 336 meters and consists of seven 48-meter-long lattice girders , the ends of which rest on a pair of round pillars.

history

It was preceded by a makeshift bridge made of wood, which was built in 1898 after the defeat of the Mahdists in order to be able to extend the railway line to Khartoum . However, the wooden bridge was destroyed by a flood in 1899, so that a more stable construction was necessary.
