Atepomaros

Atepomaros , also Atepomarus , is the name of an ancient Celtic god or hero. The name is made up of the Gallic words atepos ("horse") and maros ("big").

The god is mentioned in numerous dedicatory inscriptions from the area of ​​Roman Gaul . A dedicatory inscription found near Mauvières ( Département Indre ) in the Bituriges area ( province Gallia Aquitania ) names the god's name and documents his veneration.

Atepomaros was equated to the Roman Mercurius according to the Interpretatio Romana .

According to Roman tradition, there was a Celtic legend in which he and his companion Momoros fled from a certain Seroneus and built the city of Lugdunum ( Lyon ) as protection .
