Athanasius Hettenkofer (* December 2, 1735 in Regenstauf ; † June 12, 1803 in Waldsassen ) was abbot of the Waldsassen monastery from 1793 to 1803.

After Wigand Deltsch died in September 1792, the new abbot was elected with a delay in May 1793. Athanasius Hettenkofer found himself exposed to anti-church tendencies in the course of the Enlightenment and with the new Bavarian Elector Maximilian I Joseph , the pressure of the state on the monastery increased from 1799 onwards. Minister Maximilian von Montgelas increasingly restricted the freedoms of the monastery and dissolved it in the course of secularization in Bavaria in 1803, the property was confiscated. Athanasius Hettenkofer died that same year. It was not until the middle of the 19th century, about 60 years later, on the initiative of the Regensburg Bishop Ignatius of Senestrey, that the foundations were laid for a new beginning as a monastery for Cistercian women, which was headed by Abbess Richmunda Herrnreither from 1925 .
