Athi River , also Mavoko , is a city near Nairobi in Machakos County in Kenya . The city is named after the Athi ( Sabaki ) river that crosses it. Athi River is home to the Mavoko Municipal Council and is the headquarters of the Mavoko Division. The city has 81,302 inhabitants (2019 census) and is growing very quickly due to its proximity to the Kenyan capital Nairobi.

history
Athi River was created from Nairobi County Council in 1963 when it was dissolved. The Mavoko community has six wards (Athi River West, Katani, Kinanie / Mathani, Makadara, Muthwani, and Sophia).
economy
The city is relatively industrialized for Kenya. There are six cement factories in town. In addition, oil processing and steel production in the area also play an important role. Factors favoring the rapid growth of businesses in the region include improved infrastructure and proximity to Nairobi and various mining companies.
Infrastructure
The Athi River has a train station that was built in 1920 on the Uganda Railway from Mombasa to Kisumu . There is also a new station on the Mombasa – Nairobi standard gauge railway . The city is also connected to Nairobi and Mombasa by a highway.
