The Suwon tram is a planned transportation system in the South Korean city of Suwon . The tram network will initially consist of one line, later of three lines. The lines are to be operated with trams without overhead lines from Hyundai Rotem. The tram network is operated by Suwon Transportation Corporation (STC).
history
Situation before the first planning
Until the opening of the Shinbundang line in 2011, which was Seoul ( Gangnam ) and the 2013 expansion of the Bundang line to Suwon, there was only regular bus service in Suwon. With the connection of Suwon to the subway network of Seoul , the transport offer was expanded. Since, as in other cities in South Korea, there was a very high volume of traffic in Suwon (mainly due to road traffic and regular bus traffic), the city administration decided to build its own tram network in order to reduce regular bus traffic.
First tram line plans (2010-2019)
The first plans for this had existed since 2003, but they were not pursued at that time. In 2010 the city had a suitability test carried out for a tram in Suwon. After some project postponements and plan revisions, the final plan for a tram network in 2019 was approved.
Opening of tram lines (from 2023)
In 2023, the 6 km long tram line 1 is expected to run from Suwon Station to Jangan City Hall Station , making 12 stops. The city is also planning a second line and a third tram line for the future.
vehicles
The tram network is to be operated by overhead trams from Hyundai Rotem . Since 2010, the company has been developing tram models that, like buses in Germany, are charged at the end point and can travel the entire route without additional external energy supply.
