The Bucheon tram is a planned tram system in the South Korean city of Bucheon . It will initially consist of one line and be operated by the Bucheon Transportation Corporation (BTC) with trams without overhead lines from Hyundai Rotem .
history
Situation before the first planning
Bucheon is a 53 km² large city with a population of 850,000, which lies between Seoul and Incheon . It is geographically unfavorable between the two cities, so that the volume of traffic in the city is extremely high. Furthermore, the city is additionally burdened by the heavy bus traffic (inner-city and overland).
First tram plans (1990s to 2017)
The first plans for a tram were made in the 1990s. At that time the plan consisted of a ring and north-south line. The ring line should therefore run between the Bucheon station and the Songnae station , among other things . The north-south line should go from Gimpo Airport to the city center and further south towards Sosa-Dong. However, the plans were not pursued for financial reasons.
In 2011, the city opened a line between Songnae Daero and Songnae Station that was operated exclusively with bimodal trams . This line was introduced for testing purposes of emissions from mass transportation vehicles. The test line served as the basis for the tram project. On February 14, 2017, the city administration announced its plans for a new tram and registered it with the National Ministry for funding. In 2019 the project was approved for funding and implementation.
Opening of the tram (2022)
The city plans to complete the tram by the end of 2022. No further lines are planned so far.
vehicles
The system is to be operated by overhead trams from Hyundai Rotem . Since 2010, the company has been developing tram vehicles that, like battery buses, are charged at the end stations and can travel the entire route without any additional energy supply.
