The Athi-Galana-Sabaki is the second longest river in Kenya after the Tana . It has a total length of 625 kilometers (measured from the longest source river with the coordinates 1 ° 21'56 "S / 36 ° 42'01" E), and its catchment area covers 70,000 km². Since a further nine source rivers together add up to a considerable number of kilometers, the length of the Athi is well over 700 km. The river begins as Athi and flows into the Indian Ocean as the Galana River (also known as the Sabaki River ).

course

The source river Athi flows through the plains of Kapote and Athi, crosses the city of Athi River and continues on its way in a north-easterly direction, here it meets the Nairobi River . In the vicinity of Thika are the Fourteen Falls and the Athi winds in a south-southeast direction through the wooded slopes of the Yatta Plateau , whose basin is closed off to the east. Apart from the numerous smaller streams on the upper course, the only year-round tributary is the Tsavo , which comes from the east side of Kilimanjaro .

It then turns to the east and is then known as Sabaki (or Galana) from its lower reaches. Much of the depression is low and flat, interrupted by forests and smaller lakes that merge with the river in the rainy season. During this time, the current increases by almost nine meters. At this point it is deep and discolored yellow from the mud. After the Lugard Falls, it flows west and joins the Indian Ocean north of Malindi .

Attractions

Karen Blixen's house, Mbagathi, was - as the name Mbag-athi suggests - on the Athi River, which flows through what is now the Karen district of Nairobi . The river also crosses the Tsavo East National Park with its numerous game populations of hippos and crocodiles .
