Atwater is part of the basic network of the Montreal Metro and was the western terminus of the green line for almost twelve years. The Atwater - Angrignon section went into operation on September 3, 1978. The station is named after Avenue Atwater, named after the Montreal city councilor Edwin Atwater (1808–1874), who made a name for himself primarily in building the city's water supply.
