Papineau is a subway station in Montreal . It is located in the arrondissement of Ville-Marie at the intersection of Rue Sainte-Catherine and Avenue Papineau. Trains on the green line 1 run here . In 2006, 2,484,968 passengers used the station; this corresponds to the 37th place among the 68 stations of the Montreal Metro .

Building

The station, designed by the architecture firm Bolduc et Venne , was created as a relatively sober tunnel station with tiles in light brown tones. The platform level with two side platforms is at a depth of 21.6 meters . A distribution level above leads to long stairs to the surface. The original entrance pavilion was intended as a temporary measure from the start and was replaced in 1999 by a new building designed by Mario Bibeau. In the same year, the parking lot around the station entrance was replaced by a green area. The distances to the neighboring stations, measured from the end of the station to the beginning of the station, are 495.00 meters to Beaudry and 1157.57 meters to Frontenac . There are connections to six bus routes and two night bus routes operated by the Société de transport de Montréal .

art

Révolutions : sculpture at the entrance

A series of three murals decorates the arch above the entrance to the platform level, similar to a triptych . The work Les Patriotes de 1837-1838 by George Juhasz and Jean Cartier is a reminder of the Lower Canada rebellion in 1837 and 1838. In the central image are insurgents, British soldiers and a map of southwest Québec around the rebel leader Louis-Joseph Papineau pictured. The images on the sides represent a timeline of the events of the rebellion.

The aluminum sculpture Révolutions by Michel de Broin has stood in the green area around the entrance pavilion since 2003 . A spiral staircase typical of the terraced houses in Montreal is linked to form an endless loop in the shape of a clover leaf.

history

The opening of the station took place on October 14, 1966, together with the section from Atwater . Papineau is part of the basic network of the Montreal Metro and was the eastern terminus of the green line for a little over two months until it was extended to Frontenac on December 19, 1966 . The station is named after Avenue Papineau. This is named after the Quebec politician Joseph Papineau (1752-1841), the father of rebel leader Louis-Joseph Papineau.
