Auchentoshan ([ˌɒxənˈtɒʃən]; Scottish Gaelic Achadh an Oisein , translated "field of the corner") is a whiskey distillery in Dalmuir in the West Dunbartonshire district in the west of Scotland .
history
The distillery was built around 1800 by John Bulloch as a Duntocher Distillery . After his bankruptcy , his son Archibald Bulloch took over the distillery in 1822, but he too had to declare bankruptcy in 1826. Presumably, today's Auchentoshan distillery emerged from the existing Duntocher Distillery in 1823. There is no agreement in the literature as to whether the Auchentoshan distillery is actually the former Duntocher Distillery . In 1834 the now founded Bulloch & Co Ltd. the distillery to John Hart and Alexander Filshie. The distillery was renovated in 1875 and sold to CH Curtis & Co. in 1878 , which in 1900 sold it to Alexander Ferguson & Co Ltd. sold. As early as 1903 the distillery went to George & John McLachlan Ltd. , which in 1923 in McLachlans Ltd. were renamed. In March 1941 the distillery was partially destroyed in a German air raid and only rebuilt after the Second World War . On February 3, 1948, it was put back into operation. In the 1960s, J&R Tennent Ltd. the then owner McLachlans Ltd. in order to be swallowed by Charingtons - who were called Bass Charington from 1967 onwards - as early as 1964 . In 1969, Auchentoshan was sold to Eadie Cairns Ltd. sold, which they sold to Morrison Bowmore in 1984 , eventually ending up at Beam Suntory in 1994 . Today it is one of the last operating distilleries in the Central Lowlands .
production
The distillery's water comes from the Kilpatrick Hills. The malt used is only very lightly peated . The distillery has a mash tun ( mash do ) (6,825 t) of steel and seven fermenting vessels ( wash backs ) (per 35,000 l), three stainless steel and four from Douglas fir . It is distilled in a wash (17,300 l), an intermediate (8,000 l) and a spirit still (11,500 l). The triple distillation is unusual for Scottish distilleries, so the alcohol content of the new make is relatively high - around 80 to 82%. Before being filled into the barrels, it is initially reduced to around 63.5%, and then to a drinking strength of 40% after storage.
