Auchmeddan Castle

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Auchmeddan Castle , also Auchmedden Castle , is an abandoned castle in Mains of Auchmeddan , about 14 km west of Fraserburgh in the Scottish county of Aberdeenshire . The castle was on the side of a ravine , of the village of Pennan leads. The building was probably from the 16th century.

history

The property had belonged to the Baird family since 1568 , but they sold it to the Earls of Aberdeen , the Gordons , in the mid-18th century . The castle was demolished at the end of the 18th century. The land fell back to the Bairds in 1858 , albeit a different branch of the family.

Until 1913, parts of the south wall and a few other, scattered building stones were still visible, but as early as 1965 there was no trace of the earlier castle, as the land was being cultivated.

Legend

Thomas the Rhymer said to have predicted that "was an eagle in a Horst, as long as a bird (Engl." Bird ") in Auchmeddan was". When the Bairds left the property, a pair of eagles that nested in an eyrie near the castle are said to have also left it.
