Auchterhouse Castle is a castle northwest of Dundee in the Scottish county of Angus .

history

Original castle

The original castle dates from the 13th century and consisted of walls, towers and a donjon . It was believed to have been owned by the Ramsay family , who held the hereditary title of Sheriff of Angus .

Sir William Wallace is said to have stayed in the castle and one of the towers was named Wallace Tower after him. King Edward I of England stayed one night at Auchterhouse Castle on July 20, 1303.

In 1489 the property came into the possession of James Stewart, 1st Earl of Buchan , who bore the title of Lord Auchterhouse and was the uncle of King James III. was.

Residential tower

Later James Erskine , the 7th Earl of Buchan inherited the castle. He had a residential tower built in the original castle in the 17th century .

Mansion

The manor house , Auchterhouse Old Mansion House , which still exists today, was built around the residential tower .

today

The old mansion is now a hotel. The Old Castle's Wallace Tower is now a Scheduled Monument and Historic Scotland has listed it as a Category B Historic Building.
