history

In the Middle Ages , Auchterhouse Castle was on the site and belonged to John Ramsey , a colleague of William Wallace . Thus Ramsey entertained Wallace and 300 of his entourage at one point. The Wallace Tower, which already existed at the time, was later named in memory of this meeting. The castle was one of the most important buildings of the Ogilvy clan . By marriage she passed to the Earls of Buchan , then to the Earls of Strathmore , and finally in 1715 to come back to the Ogilvys. James Stewart, 1st Earl of Buchan had the additional title of Lord Auchterhouse since 1469 . With the exception of the Wallace Tower, nothing of the 13th century castle is visible. However, fragments of the medieval building were integrated into the structure of the manor house.

Auchterhouse Old Mansion House was built during the 17th century and expanded significantly in the mid 18th century. In 1923, the Dundee- based architectural firm Mills and Shepherd was entrusted with revisions. Fragments from the 17th century that were lying on the ground near the house were also integrated. 1979 Auchterhouse Old Mansion House was converted into a hotel. In the 2000s, however, the remodeling was reversed.

Like the manor house, the pigeon house dates from the 17th century. It is not designed in the form of a beehive hut , as is usual in earlier buildings , but already has the newer elongated shape with a pent roof at the end .
