Pennan is a Scottish fishing village. It is in the Aberdeenshire Council Area about 15 km west of Fraserburgh .

Pennan is a long street village between the coastline and several steep cliffs directly behind the houses. Because of this idyllic location, it was chosen as the main location for the film Local Hero . Pennan depicts the fictional place Ferness in the film . The scenes in which the protagonist of the film MacIntyre - played by Peter Riegert - several times from a red telephone booth directly on the harbor wall at his superior Felix Happer's - played by Burt Lancaster became famous - calls his Texan homeland. The phone booth used in the film was a dummy. Due to the large number of visitors who were looking for precisely this telephone booth in the village, a functioning telephone booth was installed in 1989 a few meters from the place where the dummy was installed. It is jokingly referred to as Scotland's most famous phone booth.

For centuries, the inhabitants of the place lived mainly from fishing. Pennan is still fishing today. However, many former fishermen have emigrated in recent years due to the difficult living conditions in the village. The vacant houses are now mostly used as holiday homes. In 2007 parts of the place were damaged by a landslide . A new crack in the rock walls discovered in 2009 gives rise to fears of further landslides.

Nearby is Cullykhan Fort (also called Castle Point, Fort Fiddes or Troup).
