Arheilgen Resurrection Church
The Arheilgen Resurrection Church is a Protestant church in Darmstadt-Arheilgen in Hesse.
history
The existence of a Carolingian predecessor chapel has been proven by excavations.
In 1225 , a Romanesque church building was first mentioned under the name of Kilian's Church. The patronage of Kilian as the founder of the Diocese of Würzburg indicates that Arheilgen belonged to the royal court of Groß-Gerau, which was transferred to the Diocese of Würzburg in 1013 .
In 1482 the church was rebuilt into the late Gothic church that still exists today in its main features . From 1482 the church was called Marienkirche . What was striking about the late Gothic appearance was the elevated choir as a priestly sanctuary opposite the nave as a lounge for lay people. In 1569 the church was badly damaged by fire.
In 1635 (Thirty Years War) the church was destroyed except for the walls and the choir vault. The reconstruction was completed in 1683.
After it had been used as a flour store in the meantime, Johann Martin Schuhknecht carried out a fundamental renovation in 1779. The baroque tower from 1783 was also designed by Johann Martin Schuhknecht .
The difference in level between the elevated choir and the nave was eliminated in 1900 and the roof of the nave was raised at the same time.
