In Portuguese history, the uprising of the marshals is an attempted coup by conservative Cartist troops against the Setembrist government in July 1837.

Since the September Revolution of 1836, Portugal has been ruled by left-liberal - Setembrist - prime ministers. The cartists could never come to terms with it, they also had Queen Maria II on their side. After a first attempted coup in 1836, the so-called belenzada , failed, they tried again the following year. The uprising was named Marshals ' uprising because the three leading conspirators, the Dukes of Terceira , Palmela and Saldanha, were all three heroes of the Miguelist War , and therefore held high military posts. However, the Setembrist government of the Marquis of Sá da Bandeira was able to put down the uprising. It officially ended on October 7, 1837 with the Treaty of Chaves ( Convenção de Chaves ), and the three rebel marshals had to go into exile. Only when the Setembrists decreed a general amnesty in the following year on the occasion of the entry into force of the new Setembrist constitution could they return to the Kingdom of Portugal .
