The solar chimney power plant Wuhai is as of early 2018 the only in-service solar chimney power plant in the world. The power plant, located near the Chinese city of Wuhai in a desert area in Inner Mongolia , has an installed capacity of 200 kW and went into operation on December 10, 2010. According to official information, the system generates 400,000 kWh of electrical energy annually and thus saves 100 tons of coal and 900 tons of water compared to a thermal power plant. The plant was originally supposed to be expanded to an area of 277 hectares and a total energy output of 27.5 MW by 2013. The chimney used for this system was originally intended to be 200 meters high, but because of the proximity to the Wuhai City Airport, only a 50 meter high chimney could be implemented, which reduces efficiency. The collector surfaces of the system were made of glass, which is an unfavorable technical solution because of the risk of scratching in sandstorms.
