The eyebright capsule spanner ( Perizoma blandiata ) is a butterfly ( moth ) from the spanner family (Geometridae).
features
butterfly
The moths reach a wingspan of 16 to 24 millimeters. The sexes do not differ in color. The basic color of the upper side of the forewing is whitish. In the midfield, a black band stands out between the front edge and the cell , which is only very indistinct or faded in the further course up to the rear edge . The hem field is colored light gray. A slightly darkened fringe stands out from the whitish-colored upper side of the hind wing.
Caterpillar
Adult caterpillars are short and stocky. They are green in color and have a broad red to red-brown topline. This color combination is an excellent camouflage and can be interpreted as an imitation of the reddish stem of an eyebright plant ( Euphrasia ).
Similar species
The small eyebright capsule tensioner ( Perizoma minorata ) differs in that the middle black band on the upper side of the forewing runs continuously from the front edge to the rear edge.
Distribution and occurrence
The distribution area of the eyebright capsule stretches from southwest Europe over the British Isles and further east to the Central Asian mountains. He is missing on the Mediterranean islands. In the Hebrides , the Faroe Islands and Iceland it is represented by the subspecies Perizoma blandiata perfasciata . The species prefers to inhabit moist forest meadows, floodplains, poor grasslands, bushy hilly landscapes and litter meadows. In the Alps , it rises to around 2000 meters.
Way of life
The eyebright capsule strainer forms an elongated generation per year, whose moths fly from mid-May to mid-September. The moths are crepuscular and nocturnal and visit artificial light sources . The main food of the caterpillars is the flowers and fruits of the common eyebright ( Euphrasia officinalis rostkoviana ). The caterpillars live freely on the food plant at an early stage and not like many other perizoma species in the seed pods. The species hibernates as a pupa on the ground and sometimes hovers over several times.
