The Augsburg Christkindlesmarkt is one of the oldest Christmas markets in Germany. The market has its origins as early as the 15th century. It has been officially called "Christkindlesmarkt" since 1949.

History of the Augsburg Christkindlesmarkt

Gingerbread as a sweets at Christmas time played from the 12./13. Century. The gingerbread bakers decorated their Christmas cookies with motifs of beautiful women and proud knights and offered them for sale to the citizens. Together with the first Christmas cribs from Italy and all kinds of festive wall decorations, they are likely to have been the best sellers at the Augsburg Christmas market, which is mentioned as the "Lebzeltermarkt" in 1498 in a municipal protocol. On December 22nd, 1498, the city council regulated the uniform design of the stalls in front of the cathedral and the Perlach tower. This text mentions a sale “have come from the ages”. In 1527 the holding of a gingerbread market at the old town hall, which had to give way to the current building, is again documented in files.

The Christkindlesmarkt has several historical names. Until around 1800 it also existed as a Nikolai market , where nativity carvers from the village of Oberhausen in front of the city served their customers with Christmas goods on three days in Advent . The event, officially known as the Christmas and Christmas Market in 1808 , entered the local population at that time as Christkindles Kirreweyh . In 1815 the stalls were grouped around the square at the Merkurbrunnen from December 21st to 24th.

Over the centuries, the market was relocated again and again, so that it was at home almost everywhere in Augsburg city center. Still on Maximilianstrasse in the 19th century, for example, he moved to Ludwigstrasse in 1898, to Oberen Graben in 1903, to Jakobsplatz in 1924 and to the fruit market in 1930. It took place at Königsplatz from 1933 to 1943 and 1945/46, at St. Anna in 1947, in Fuggerstrasse 1948 to 1951 and 1961/62 and on Elias-Holl-Platz from 1952 to 1960. The Christkindlesmarkt has been open since 1963 the Augsburg town hall square .
