The Elias-Holl-Platz with the back of the Augsburg town hall

The Elias-Holl-Platz is a square in the old town of Augsburg . The quiet and partly tree-shaded square at the back of the Augsburg town hall built by Elias Holl is several meters lower than the town hall square on the front of the town hall due to the difference in level between the Augsburg high terrace and the Lechviertel , so that the town hall is still a part of it Appears on the first floor.

A terrace over the entire width of the town hall overlooks Elias-Holl-Platz, which is managed from the Ratskeller in the basement of the town hall in summer. An outside staircase connects the terrace with the square. There are several historic town houses from the 16th century on the south side of Elias-Holl-Platz. On the eastern side of the square opposite the town hall, the Sterngasse joins the monastery of the Franciscan Sisters of Maria Stern . The north side is occupied by an extension to the town hall.

history

The Eisenberg

When the Augsburg town hall was built from 1615 to 1624, there was neither the town hall square in its current size nor the Elias-Holl-Platz; these areas were built on. Until the late 19th century, today's Elias-Holl-Platz was the location of a prison , the Augsburg "Eisenhaus". After this prison, the steep, stepped footpath that leads down to the present-day square on the right of the town hall was also given the name "Eisenberg". In 1882 the iron house was demolished in order to build an administration building on this site. But due to public protests, the newly created square behind the town hall, which for the first time allowed a clear view of the rear of the imposing Renaissance building , remained undeveloped and was christened in honor of Augsburg's city architect Elias-Holl-Platz. The planned administration building was built a little further north. The design of the square was completed in 1890.

In 1907 the Augsburg artists' association “Die Ecke” was founded, which in 1913 bought the former Ratskeller at Elias-Holl-Platz 2, on the corner of Hunoldsgraben. This restaurant was named "Eckestuben" in the 1930s and is now called "Die Ecke". In 1971 the artists' association opened two houses down, at Elias-Holl-Platz 6, the "corner gallery".

From 1952 to 1960 Elias-Holl-Platz was the location of the Augsburg Christkindlesmarkt .
