August Heitmann (* 1907 in Kalymnos , Greece ; † 1971 in Santiago de Chile ) was a German swimming athlete . In 1926 and 1927 he won the European championship in the 4 x 200 meter freestyle relay.
Born in Greece, Heitmann started for the 1st Bielefelder SV until 1924 , and in 1925 he moved to the Magdeburg swimming club from 1896 . In 1926 and 1927 he was German champion over 100 meters freestyle. Heitmann took part in the first European Swimming Championships in Budapest in 1926 . In the only relay decision, the 4 x 200 meter freestyle relay, the German relay team swam with August Heitmann, Joachim Rademacher , Friedel Berges and Herbert Heinrich in 9: 57.2 minutes to win over the Hungarians and the Swedes. The following year, at the European Swimming Championships in Bologna in 1927 , Heitmann won the bronze medal in the 100 meters freestyle in 1: 03.4 minutes behind the Swede Arne Borg and the Hungarian István Bárány . The German relay defended the title in the same line-up as in 1926 in 9: 49.6 minutes before the Swedes and Hungarians. At the Olympic Games in Amsterdam in 1928 , Heitmann was eliminated from the 100 meter freestyle in the semifinals. Karl Schubert , August Heitmann, Friedel Berges and Herbert Heinrich missed the medal chance in the relay due to a disqualification in the run-up.
Two years after the Olympic Games, Heitmann emigrated from Barcelona, where he temporarily lived, to Chile.
