August Oeltermann

August Oeltermann (born February 21, 1836 in Oldenburg ; † May 18, 1902, ibid.) Was a German lawyer and secret finance councilor.

Life and work

August Oeltermann, son of a bailiff, studied law in Heidelberg, Berlin and Göttingen after graduating from high school in Oldenburg, where he became a member of the Hanover fraternity in the summer semester of 1857 . He passed the state examination in 1863 in Oldenburg. He then entered the administrative service of the Grand Duchy of Oldenburg and was initially an assistant at the Jever office and then as an official assessor at the government in Eutin .

In 1872 Oeltermann was transferred to the Finance Department of the Grand Duchy of Oldenburg to take on the business of a lecturing council. At the same time he belonged to the customs office in Oldenburg. After five years he was again employed in the area of general internal administration , first as a clerk at the Damme office and then as a senior clerk (district administrator) at the Wildeshausen office . Afterwards he was a full member of the government in Eutin as a councilor. In 1885 he was again appointed to the finance department of the Grand Duchy of Oldenburg; there he rose in 1887 to Oberfinanzrat and in 1896 to the secret Oberfinanzrat. In this position, Oeltermann received the Honorary Commander's Cross of the House and Merit Order from Duke Peter Friedrich Ludwig von Oldenburg in 1899 .

Until his death, August Oeltermann was the highest-ranking official in the financial administration of the German state for six years and thus played a key role in all tax and budgetary decisions of the Grand Duchy of Oldenburg.

In addition, Oeltermann continued to hold public offices on a part-time basis. He was temporarily chairman of the examination committee for surveying and land registry. For several years he was a member of the authority responsible for resolving conflicts of jurisdiction between administrative and judicial authorities. He was also a member and since 1897 chairman of the management of the widows, orphans and annuity funds of the Grand Duchy of Oldenburg.
