August Wiesmann

August Wiesmann (born December 31, 1893 in Ibbenbüren , † April 12, 1972 ibid) was a German politician ( SPD ) and union official.

Life and work

After attending elementary school , Wiesmann worked as a goods floor worker for the Deutsche Reichsbahn-Gesellschaft. From 1911 he was organized as a free trade union. In 1912 he joined the SPD. From 1919 he belonged to the German Railway Workers' Association (DEV), the later unified association of railway workers in Germany (EdED). In the same year Wiesmann became a member of the district works council of the Reichsbahn in Essen. From 1923 to 1926 he was chairman of the district works council and a member of the superordinate main works council of the Deutsche Reichsbahn-Gesellschaft. From 1927 to 1933 Wiesmann was the full-time trade union secretary of the EdED in Duisburg.

After the National Socialists came to power and the free trade unions were broken up, Wiesmann was dismissed. In October 1934 he moved from Duisburg to Ibbenbüren to avoid reprisals. He was under surveillance by the Gestapo , who suspected him of being active in the resistance against the Nazi regime.

After the end of the Second World War , Wiesmann worked as an independent cattle merchant.

Membership and offices

Active in the rebuilding of the SPD in Ibbenbüren, Wiesmann was a member of the state parliament of North Rhine-Westphalia from April 20, 1947 to June 17, 1950 . He was directly elected in constituency 082 Tecklenburg.

The council of the district Tecklenburg belonged Wiesmann 1946-1965 on, the city council Ibbenbueren from 1945 to 1969. From October 1951 to November 1952 he was deputy district administrator of the district Tecklenburg and from late November 1952 to early April 1961 Mayor of the city Ibbenbüren.

Honors

Wiesmann was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit 1st Class , which was awarded to him on May 5, 1959.
