Auguste François (born August 20, 1857 - † July 4, 1935 ) was a French diplomat and photographer.

He first worked in Paraguay from 1893 to 1895 before traveling to southern China as consul from 1896 to 1904 . He obtained permission to build the Yunnan Railway from Haiphong in Vietnam to Kunming . During his travels through southern China, he took many photos that document life in China at the time, as well as the first known film recordings from China in 1901. In contrast to most of his contemporaries, he was not a typical representative of the colonialism that was prevalent at the time , but tried to understand and learn the language and culture of the local population, which is why the Chinese also referred to him as "White Mandarin".

The Tonkin black langur ( Trachypithecus francoisi ) is scientifically named after him.

The Auguste François Association strives to preserve its cultural heritage.
