The Emory S. Land (AS-39) is the lead ship of the Emory S. Land class , the United States Navy's newest submarine tender class . The ship was named after Admiral Emory S. Land .

history

The Emory S. Land was the first submarine tender to be built since the L. Y. Spear class . It was developed to support and supply the boats of the then new Los Angeles class . She was laid down at the Lockheed Shipbuilding and Construction Company in 1976 and launched in May 1977.

The ship provides the submarine crews with equipment, food, consumer goods, medical care, marine legal and administrative support and mail. The ship has every imaginable supply and repair facility, including various shops where the submarine crews can shop.

In September 1980, the Emory S. Land was transferred to the Pacific Fleet to serve as part of the Indian Ocean Battle Group . In July 1986 it acted as the officer in Tactical Command for four US warships and five other ships of friendly naval forces in the transfer of a multinational unit from the Virginia Capes to the New York harbor . During that operation, she participated in the Naval Review as part of the Fourth of July Statue of Liberty Rededication celebrations. In August 1987, the Emory S. Land served as a tactical operations center and communications base for the Submarine Squadron Eight and Submarine Squadron Six in various maneuver scenarios, both in surface combat groups and as a supporter of the submarine combat groups.

In 1986 the ship embarked on a 182-day voyage, during which it circled the globe once and covered 26,011 nautical miles . During this trip it visited the ports of Lisbon ( Portugal ), Naples ( Italy ), Port Said ( Egypt ), Muscat ( Oman ), Fremantle ( Australia ) and Rodman ( Panama ). Meanwhile, it was anchored in the Arabian Gulf for 92 days and served as a tender for the Joint Task Force Middle East and the aircraft carrier combat groups operating there .

In 1993, the ship served the Commander, Submarine Group Two as a flagship during his visit to Boston and acted as accommodation for the Commander in Chief of the Russian Northern Fleet during his visit.

The ship was the only unit permanently subordinate to the Submarine Force, US Atlantic Fleet , stationed in La Maddalena (Italy) from 1999 to 2007. As of September 30, 2007, the USS Emory S. Land (AS-39) was stationed in Bremerton, a facility at Naval Base Kitsap in Washington State . She has been stationed on Diego Garcia since August 2010 .

In early 2010, part of the military crew was replaced by civilian seafarers. Together with USS La Jolla (SSN-701) , the Emory S. Land visited Goa in April 2011 .

Awards

The USS Emory S. Land received numerous unit awards , including twice the Meritorious Unit Commendation , the Navy Expeditionary Medal , the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal and four Battle Efficiency Awards . The unit also won the Captain Edward F. Ney Memorial for Large Ship Food Service Excellence award in 1985 and 1995.
