Auguste Strobl (born June 24, 1807 , † January 22, 1871 in Passau ) was a Bavarian beauty who was considered by King Ludwig I with enthusiastic poems and the wife of the district forester of Ergoldsbach .

Life

The daughter of a royal Bavarian chief accountant attracted the attention of King Ludwig I for an unknown reason, who wrote some enthusiastic poems about her. Since he was planning to build up a collection of portraits of beautiful women of all classes that one could encounter on the street in his city of Munich, he had Auguste Strobl painted by his court painter Joseph Karl Stieler in December 1826 .

However, the result displeased the king. Stieler had chosen a view that emphasized Strobl's gooseneck too much. Since Ludwig Strobl wanted to have documented natural beauty, it was not possible to shorten her neck by painting. Stieler had to paint them again, but this time in a rather uncomfortable position. The neck, which was too long, was also covered by a chain. Ludwig, who had briefly thought of including both pictures in his beauty gallery, decided on the second version. The first picture was lost. It is possible that Ludwig gave it to Strobl. It only reappeared on the art market in 1976 and was bought by the Residenzmuseum in Munich.

Auguste Strobl married the district forester Hilber von Ergoldsbach with Ludwig's support in 1831 and became the mother of five children. The king visited her again in the district forester in 1835 and on this occasion wrote a last poem on her. On this occasion he may have brought her the first picture as a gift, but this is not proven.

From 1836 to around 1850 she lived with her family in Schönberg in the Bavarian Forest. King Ludwig is also entered in the parish registers there as Ludwig Hilber's baptismal witness. He was not present in person, but was represented. Nothing was known about the further life of Auguste Strobl, married Hilber. She died in Passau in 1871.
