The Augustinian Church of Our Lady ob der Schutter was a rococo monastery church in Ingolstadt and was one of the most important works by Johann Michael Fischer . The monastery ob der Schutter of the Augustinian Hermits existed since 1606.

Furnishing

The church building started in 1736 replaced the former Schutter chapel. The statue of Mary venerated there, the so-called Schuttermother , was a late Gothic statue of the Virgin Mary from the beginning of the 15th century and was so popular that a larger building was necessary. The main motif of the building was a central room on the floor plan of an unequal-sided octagon with a protruding aedicule with an entrance niche. Fischer's building also showed the motif of the sloping corner with offset Corinthian columns with curved entablature pieces. The ceiling frescoes were the work of Johann Baptist Zimmermann .

destruction

During the Second World War , the church was badly damaged in a US air raid on April 9, 1945. The Augustinian Church suffered a direct hit from an explosive bomb that penetrated the vaults and roof structure. As a result of the explosion, the monastery buildings including the church choir were completely destroyed, the central axis of the north longitudinal facade of the nave and the vaults collapsed. 73 people were killed in the crypt , which was used as an air raid shelter .

In May 1950, the city council decided to demolish the ruin for good, as widening the street seemed to be a priority before rebuilding the church. In its place is the Ingolstadt Viktualienmarkt today. Paving stones mark the outline of the church on the ground.
