The Augustinerstraße is a street in Erfurt's historic district in Thuringia . The 400 meter long street runs in a north-easterly direction from Michaelisstraße to Johannesstraße . The street is named after the Augustinian monastery on the street .

history

The street name was first associated with the Augustinian monastery in 1493, when it was given the name apud Augustinenses . After several renaming in the following centuries, it received its current name in 1826. Originally the street ended in the south-western area at the Lehmannsbrücke , it was not until 1870 that it was extended to Michaelisstraße and the Lehmannsbrücke was dropped as one of the oldest names in the city. The Via Regia once ran through Augustinerstrasse.

description

In addition to residential buildings, the following buildings of historical significance are located on Augustinerstraße:

  • the Georgenburse near the Lehmann Bridge,
  • the Nikolaikirche , of which only the church tower remains today,
  • the Augustinian monastery

The street is passable from Michaelisstraße as a dead end to the Lehmannsbrücke, which is closed to vehicle traffic. From Johannesstrasse, it can be used as a thoroughfare in both directions.
