The Michaelisstraße is a street in the historical center of Erfurt and is referred to as the "stone chronicle of the city". It stretches for about 400 meters from Benediktsplatz to the Marbacher Gasse junction, where it turns into Moritzstraße and is characterized by its particularly old, often from the 15th and 16th centuries, peripheral buildings. In addition, together with the adjacent Benediktsplatz and the fish market, it forms the most important pub mile in Erfurt with numerous restaurants, cafes and bars that offer extensive outdoor dining on the street in the warm season.

history

The street is named after the Michaeliskirche on the corner of Allerheiligenstraße. In 1370 the street from Benediktsplatz to the corner of Pergamentergasse was given the name Platea Michaelis , in 1666 the name was changed to bey S. Micheln , and in 1817 to St. Michael . Michaelisstrasse has existed in its current size since 1826. The square at the southern end was initially called Vor der Krämerbrücke and was renamed Benediktsplatz in 1991 . This place got its name from the Benediktikirche , the western bridgehead church of the Krämerbrücke . It was sold in 1807, then partially demolished by 1810 and completely demolished in 1895.

At the time of the fall of the Wall , the building complexes along the street were in a desolate and partially dilapidated condition. In 1991 the area bounded by Michaelisstraße, Studentengasse, Breitstrom, and Kreuzgasse was declared an urban redevelopment area Michaelisstraße, East and extensively redeveloped in the following years.

traffic

The southern part of the street from Benediktsplatz to Michaeliskirche is closed to through traffic and can only be used by residents and delivery traffic, whereas the middle and northern part is unrestricted.

Historic Buildings

The street bears its nickname “Stone Chronicle of the City” because of the multitude of historical and urban-historical buildings.

At the southern beginning of the street, as part of the urban redevelopment in the early 1990s, the existing structure of the old synagogue , built around 1100, was rediscovered and documented, one of the oldest synagogues in Europe. During construction work in 1998, a Jewish gold treasure from the 13th / 14th centuries was found near the synagogue on Michaelisstrasse 43 . Century found.

Opposite is the Haus zum Schwarzen Horn , in the 15./16. Century seat of a printing company. It was there that Wolfgang Schenk printed one of the first books in 1499 that contained mostly Greek text passages. In 1518, Schenk's successor Mathes painter printed Adam Ries' first arithmetic book there .

About in the middle of the street is located in the 12./13. Michaelis Church , built in the 16th century . She owns the oldest church bell in the city called Katharina . Opposite is the Collegium Maius , which was built in the 14th century as the representative main building of the University of Erfurt . In 2009, work began on redesigning the building complex to become the regional church office of the Evangelical Church in Central Germany, which was completed with the opening in June 2011.

Next to it is the house Zur Great Noä's Ark and Castel Sant'Angelo , which was built around 1565 and housed the printing workshop of the Sachse family in the 16th century. There writings by Martin Luther , Adam Ries and reprints of the Strasbourg Eulenspiegel edition were printed. One of the dark man's letters is said to have been written and printed in the back of the building . Today it serves the University of Erfurt as an international meeting center.
