Augustus Molade Akiwumi

Augustus Molade Akiwumi was a lawyer, judge and politician in the British colony of Gold Coast and later Ghana , Botswana and Kenya .

Akiwumi was born in Nigeria , but received Ghanaian citizenship. Akiwumi completed his training in England at Queen's College Taunton in Somerset from 1910. He then studied law at Cambridge University . In 1921 he was inducted into the Lincoln's Inn Bar in London . After studying at Midland Bank in Ludgate Hill, London, he worked as a bank clerk and later returned to Ghana.

Akiwumi became the second speaker in the Ghanaian parliament in February 1958 and held this position until June 1960. Joseph Richard Asiedu was succeeded in office and third speaker in parliament, and Emmanuel Charles Quist was Akiwumi's predecessor . Akiwumi was featured on the cover of Life Magazine on January 18, 1960 in the official attire of the Speaker of Parliament .

Akiwumi served in the office of Lord President for the Court of Justice of the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA). Akiwumi was a judge on the Court of Appeal in Botswana and Kenya . He also held the office of chairman of the legal committee for the investigation of the tribal clashes in Kenya and was a member of the Eminent African Jurists, which were responsible for drafting the minutes of the Court of Justice of the African Union. Akiwumi chaired the tribunal investigating the conduct of judges at the Court of Appeal in Kenya. Akiwumi was also a member of the Kenyan Judicial Service Commission .

Akiwumi was married to Helen Kabuki Ocansey.
