Peter Ala Adjetey

Rt. Hon. Peter Ala Adjetey (born August 11, 1931 in Accra , Ghana ; † July 15, 2008 ibid) was a Ghanaian lawyer, university professor and politician. Since January 7, 2001 he was the second speaker of the current parliament of the Republic of Ghana. His term of office ended on January 6, 2005.

Adjetey attended St. Pauls School in La near Accra and later the Accra Bishop Boys' School and the Accra Academy. In 1954 he finished his studies at the University College of the Gold Coast with the London University intermediate Bachelor of Arts. Adjetey moved to the University of Nottingham in the UK and graduated with a Bachelor of Law in 1958.

Career

As early as 1959 he was admitted to the Middle Temple Bar Association in London and, on his return to Ghana, to the Ghana Bar Association in the same year.

Adjetey worked as a prosecutor between 1959 and 1962. In 1962 he switched from the prosecution to the practice of law, in which he remained until January 7, 2001. In addition to his career as a lawyer, Peter Ala Adjetey held various political, legal and teaching positions.

Between 1960 and 1962 he worked part-time as a lecturer at the Institute for Adult Education. Between 1964 and 1968 he also worked part-time as a lecturer at the Ghana School of Law . From 1979 to 1981 he was a member of parliament. During this time he was chairman of the parliamentary legal committee. From 1985 to 1989 he was national president of the Ghana Bar Association and from 2000 he was President of the African Bar Association . Between 1995 and 1998 he was national chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
