The training device duel simulator , AGDUS for short , is the tactical , laser-based weapon training system used by the German armed forces for the direct simulation of combat exercises .

General

AGDUS, like the Multiple Integrated Laser Combat System (MILES), is used by the US armed forces to train soldiers on an operational basis. However, the OSAG code used by the AGDUS to encode the laser signals and the MILES laser code are not compatible with each other.

The system can be used with all direct-aiming firearms in conjunction with maneuver ammunition . The system has a transmitting and a receiving part to simulate the effects of the weapon. The transmitter hits the receiver of the bombarded object with eye-safe laser light.

Systems

There are three different systems:

  • Disposable system: a transmitter irradiates the receiver.
  • Two-way system: after a distance measurement, a corresponding pulse is emitted
  • Real time: During the simulated flight of the projectile, a laser scanner scans for targets

functionality

A transmitter adapted to the weapon sends a coded laser beam when a shot is fired. Various data such as the shooter's identity number, type of weapon and ammunition are transmitted in order to be able to evaluate who hit whom with which weapon.

If the receiver is optically shot at, an acoustic signal sounds in the control unit. Depending on the hit zone, a built-in display shows the wound, from slightly, moderately to severely injured, and the associated downtime; a complete breakdown is also possible, i.e. the virtual death of the wearer. The decision on the severity of the injury in the respective hit zone is made by a random generator. The stronger the fire, the higher the chance of serious injury.

In order to switch off the beeping sound generated by a hit, the hit soldier has to remove a kind of “intelligent key” from the laser transmitter and insert it into the receiver. As a result, the soldier is incapable of fighting and must be treated by his comrades in accordance with the injury.

A reactivation is only possible by the referee. For this purpose, it has a kind of binoculars with a similar function.

The vehicle equipment works in a similar way.

commitment

The system has been used by the Bundeswehr for combat simulation since the mid-1990s and is used to train infantry and vehicle crews. The Bundeswehr, for example, has various simulation systems for:

  • the Leopard 2 main battle tank ,
  • the Marder armored personnel carrier (AGDUS Marder 1 A3, more than 200 pieces of the real-time system with a range of 2000 m),
  • the Gepard anti-aircraft gun ,
  • the grenade machine gun (GraMaWa),
  • the handgun G3 (AGDUS G3, about 4,300 pieces of the one-way system with a range of 400 m),
  • the handgun G36 ,
  • the sniper rifle G22 ,
  • for the MG3 machine gun (AGDUS MG, around 580 pieces of the two-way system with a range of 600 m) and
  • for anti-tank defense the anti-tank weapon MILAN (AGDUS PzAbwWa MILAN, over 400 pieces of the real-time system with a range of 2000 m) and
  • the Panzerfaust 3 (AGDUS Panzerfaust 3, real-time system with a range of 450 m).

Manufacturers of AGDUS systems are SAAB Training Systems, Rheinmetall Defense Electronics (RDE, formerly STN Atlas Elektronik), Jenoptik ESW (formerly ESW Extel Systems Wedel) and RUAG COEL GmbH (formerly COEL).

Further development

On March 14, 2016, Rheinmetall Defense Electronics GmbH was awarded the contract for a further development under the name "AGDUS Handguns 2nd Generation". The current head of the GÜZ, Oberst Becker, promises a weight reduction, optimization of the battery management and modules for other handguns (G82, MP7) for the second generation. Furthermore, on February 5, 2016, Rheinmetall MAN Military Vehicles GmbH was commissioned to integrate AGDUS into the TPz Fuchs A8A3A1.
