As part of the Schengen Agreement , the previous foreigner's identity card was replaced by an identity card in credit card format from December 12, 2008 for third-country nationals. This became necessary because with the accession to Schengen the ID cards for foreigners from EU / EFTA countries have to differ from those of third country nationals. Foreigners from EU / EFTA countries as well as people from the asylum sector will continue to receive the previous paper foreigner identity card. Third-country nationals who are members of a family of Schengen nationals will also not be issued the new residence permit. Since January 24, 2011 - also within the framework of the Schengen Agreement - biometric information has been saved in the new foreigner identity card (credit card format). The foreigner's identity card (credit card format) is equipped with an RFID chip for this purpose . The fingerprints are protected with Extended Access Control (EAC) , the remaining data can be accessed with Password Authenticated Connection Establishment (PACE) , alternatively with Basic Access Control (BAC) . Due to the change of producer on December 1, 2018, the current residence permit for third-country nationals was slightly adjusted. The most striking changes are increased tactile elements both on the front and on the back, as well as the change of the font of the document number to OCR-B. Due to the requirements of the EU, the current specifications have been revised and the foreigner ID card in credit card format will appear with a new layout by July 9, 2020 at the latest.
