An ellipsis in the broader sense is a character that indicates a linguistic omission in the script. In the narrower sense, the “ellipsis” means the apostrophe ('). But there are other characters that also indicate the omission of text parts.
Typographic ellipses in German
The most important ellipses apart from the apostrophe are the ellipses (...) and ellipses of different lengths:
- A short dash (-) is normally used when omitting parts of the word in abbreviated form , for example in street names in telephone books: short “Emser-31” for “Emser Straße 31”. The more common designation for ellipses in this use is supplementary stroke (what has been left out in the scriptures must be supplemented mentally by the reader).
- If entire words or pieces of text are to be shown as missing (for example in the case of a broken speech), a semicolon (-) can be used instead of the usual ellipsis :
"He said that ..." or "He said that -"
The following characters are used as ellipses:
- the apostrophe (') for omitted letters or syllables and word components ( elision )
- the ellipses (...) with multiple uses
- the quarter dash (-) as an ellipsis for omitted word parts ( supplementary stroke )
- the semicolon (-) as an ellipsis for sentence ellipses and in numbers
- the em dash (-) for two zeros after the comma; only for currencies in tables
- the tilde (~) as a short replacement character for a keyword in dictionaries , lexicons or indices
