Merzdorf observation tower

The Merzdorf observation tower is part of the Cottbuser Ostsee project and is located in the Merzdorf district of Cottbus in Brandenburg .

The tower is 34 meters high and is located on the western edge of the former Cottbus-Nord open- cast mine . 173 steps lead to a viewing platform, which allows a view of the opencast mine and the city of Cottbus and the surrounding area. It was built by Vattenfall Europe Mining and Generation in a construction period of six months and opened in December 2006 in the presence of the then Mayor of Cottbus, Frank Szymanski . The sand path leads along the tower , a cycle path that was opened to the public in 2008 on the occasion of the “ Märkischer Sand ” exhibition .
