Frank Szymanski (born May 1, 1956 in Cottbus ) is a German politician ( SPD ). From 2006 to 2014 he was Lord Mayor of Cottbus.

Life and work

Frank Szymanski studied from 1974 to 1978 at the Pedagogical University of Potsdam and finished his studies as a certified teacher for history and German. Then he was a specialist teacher at a 6th polytechnic high school in Cottbus until 1984 .

From 1984 to 1988 he was a specialist teacher for the Abitur level and stayed in Bulgaria. From 1989 to 1991 he was director of the 24th Polytechnic High School in Cottbus, then until 1998 he was headmaster of the Leonardo da Vinci comprehensive school in Cottbus (8th comprehensive school). At the same time, from 1991 to 1994, he completed an extension course in political education at the Brandenburg State Education Institute and the Free University of Berlin .

He is divorced and has two children.

From 1993 to 1998 Frank Szymanski was a member of the Cottbus city council and chairman of the committee for education, youth and sport, in 1994 he became chairman of the SPD parliamentary group in the city council. On December 10, 1998, he was appointed State Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport. From September 2003 to November 2006 he was Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Planning in the State of Brandenburg (Cabinets Platzeck I and Platzeck II ). In the 2004 state elections, he was directly elected to the Brandenburg state parliament in the Cottbus II state constituency.

After Karin Rätzel was recalled , the early election for Lord Mayor of Cottbus took place on October 22, 2006. Only two candidates were admitted by the state election committee, Frank Szymanski was supported by the SPD and the Greens , Holger Kelch by the CDU , the Left , the FDP , the women's list and the AUB. Frank Szymanski was elected with 61.16% of the vote, Holger Kelch received 38.84%. Frank Szymanski took up the post of Lord Mayor of the City of Cottbus on November 29, 2006 and thus resigned from the state government and the state parliament. For him, Kerstin Kircheis moved up in the state parliament. In the mayoral election on September 14, 2014, he was defeated by his opponent Holger Kelch (CDU), who was elected with 50.7 percent of the vote in the first ballot, while Szymanski received 37.3 percent.
