Erhard Müller (politician, 1926)

Erhard Müller (born March 23, 1926 in Chemnitz or Plauen ; † March 21, 2017 ) was a German politician ( SED ) and Lord Mayor of Cottbus from 1974 until his resignation in December 1989 .

Life

Erhard Müller was born in 1926 as the son of a cook in Chemnitz or Plauen. He attended elementary school in Plauen and then began an apprenticeship as a machine fitter . In 1944 Müller was drafted into the Wehrmacht and was taken prisoner of war by the Soviets , from which he did not return until 1949. He then continued his training and then worked for the City Council of Plauen. In 1951 he joined the SED. One year later, Müller started at the State Administration School of Saxony . On the side, Müller worked as a teacher and then until 1965 as deputy director at the administrative school in Runde near Weißwasser .

Until 1967, Müller studied political science and law in Babelsberg . He was then chairman of the Senftenberg district council until 1973 . On May 24, 1974, Erhard Müller was elected Lord Mayor of Cottbus as the successor to Heinz Kluge .

During Müller's time as Lord Mayor, the population of Cottbus exceeded the 100,000-inhabitant limit for the first time on September 4, 1975 and Cottbus thus became a major city. During his tenure, the education center was completed in 1974 . The foundation stone for the construction of the Cottbus new building area Sachsendorf also falls during Müller's tenure.

In May 1989 Erhard Müller was re-elected as Lord Mayor. On December 13, 1989, after protests, Müller resigned as mayor after it became known that he was allegedly involved in election fraud after 1.8% of Cottbus citizens had spoken out against the candidates of the National Front . Waldemar Kleinschmidt was his successor .

In June 2017 it became known that Erhard Müller had died in March 2017 at the age of 90.
