Heinz Kluge (politician)

Heinz Kluge (born August 3, 1924 in Linderode ; † June 27, 2014 ) was a German politician ( SED ). From 1958 to 1974 he was Lord Mayor of Cottbus .

Life

Kluge, son of a stoker and machinist, learned the trade of industrial clerk and then worked as a construction and assembly worker. During the Second World War , he did military service on the Eastern Front from 1942 and after being wounded, he ended up in a British internment camp in Denmark .

After his return, Kluge was initially a construction and assembly worker in Forst (Lausitz) in 1946/47 . He joined the SED in 1947. He attended the Cottbus Pedagogical Institute in 1947/48 and became a new teacher . He then worked as a teacher and headmaster in Forst. With the formation of the Cottbus District Council in 1952, Kluge initially became a teacher training officer, school inspector and then head of the popular education department at the Cottbus District Council.

After serving in the barracked people's police (1955-1958) and a distance learning course at the German Academy for Political Science and Law in Potsdam-Babelsberg with a degree in law, Kluge became Lord Mayor of Cottbus on September 1, 1958.

During his term of office the construction of new residential areas, the redesign of the city center, the construction of the swimming stadium and the inauguration of the space flight planetarium fell. During Kluge's tenure, Cottbus developed into the center of the coal and energy industry in the GDR. The foundation stone for today's university location was laid with the foundation of the engineering college for construction in 1969 .

In October 1959, together with Mayor André Grégoire ( FKP ), he founded the twinning between Cottbus and the French city of Montreuil . In 1967 another partnership followed with the Italian city of Grosseto .

On July 31, 1974, shortly before his 50th birthday, his position as Lord Mayor of Cottbus ended. Kluge then worked as the deputy director of the Institute for Teacher Education and, from 1977, as director of the medical college at the Cottbus district hospital . In 1989 he retired.
